From Robots to Cobots

From Robots to Cobots

Robot:  Robot is a machine which works automatic either programmable or not.

Cobot:  “Collaborative robot” is designed to work collaboratively with humans. This collaboration can take various forms, such as working side-by-side with humans on assembly lines, assisting humans with tasks in shared workspaces, or even physically interacting with humans.

Machine

A “machine” refers to any device or mechanism that uses energy to perform a task. Machines can range from simple tools like hammer and screwdriver to complex systems like computers and robots.

Difference between Machine and Robot

Machine

  • A machine is a device or mechanism that uses energy to perform a task.
  • It can be either simple or complex, and it may or may not have the ability to move or interact with its environment autonomously.
  • Machines can include a wide range of devices, from simple tools like hammers and pulleys to complex systems like computers and vehicles.
  • Machines may or may not have sensors, actuators, or intelligence, and they may require human operators to control or oversee their operation.

Robot

  • A robot is a specific type of machine that typically has the ability to move and interact with its environment autonomously.
  • Unlike many traditional machines, robots are often equipped with sensors, actuators, and programmable control systems that allow them to understand their surroundings and make decisions based on that information.
  • Robots are often used in tasks that require flexibility, expertise, and adaptability, such as manufacturing, assembly, and exploration.
  • While all robots are machines, not all machines are robots. For example, a conveyor belt in a factory is a machine, but it is not considered a robot because it lacks the ability to move or interact autonomously.

Cobots

What is a Cobot?

A Cobot (Collaborative Robot) is a robot that works with humans instead of replacing them. These robots are safe, easy to use, and help in different tasks like making products, helping in hospitals, and organizing warehouses.

How Do Cobots Work?

  • Sensors & Cameras: Help cobots see and avoid accidents.
  • AI & Programming: Help them learn and do tasks better.
  • Lightweight & Flexible: Can be moved and used in different places.

Where Are Cobots Used?

  1. Factories & Manufacturing
    • Help make cars, mobile phones, and other products.
    • Example: UR5 Cobot, used in car factories.
  2. Healthcare & Hospitals
    • Help doctors during surgeries and take care of patients.
    • Example: LBR Med, used in medical procedures.
  3. Warehouses & Logistics
    • Carry and arrange heavy packages in warehouses.
    • Example: Fetch Robotics, used in Amazon warehouses.
  4. Food Industry
    • Help make and pack food.
    • Example: Cobot Barista, which makes coffee.
  5. Education & Research
    • Help students and researchers learn about robotics.
    • Example: Baxter Cobot, used in universities.

Benefits of Cobots

✅ Work safely with humans.
✅ Reduce human effort in heavy and repetitive tasks.
✅ Easy to use and program.
✅ Improve speed and accuracy.
✅ Cheaper than large industrial robots.

Challenges of Cobots

❌ Cannot do very complex tasks.
❌ Need humans to guide them for some jobs.
❌ Expensive for small businesses.

Future of Cobots

In the future, cobots will become smarter, cheaper, and more useful in homes, hospitals, and industries. They will make work easier and help humans in many ways.
